About
This Channel
(By WBMX.COM PD Sal Amato)
As
a kid I was into
music. My father played the horn and my
mother, who was the last artist signed to
Vee-Jay records eventually became one of the
most sought after jingle singers in the
Country. Our house was filled with music.
Mostly Jazz, Soul, R&B and some Rock N'
Roll. I appreciated music and musicians far
more than any normal kid that's for sure.I loved it all. Then one day
my Dad took me to see his friend Count
Bee-Jay who did a show called "Journeys
Into Music" on Chicago's WXFM (now WCKG)
and I got to fetch records. Wow! 78s,
Classic Jazz LPs and stuff like that. I was
10 but hey, I was helping out at a radio
station and life was great!
After Bee-Jay went off
the air there was this cat who came on and
just blew me away. His name?
Herb Kent. Herbie Baby. Herb Kent, The Cool Gent. |

| Herb
opened my eyes to even more music and more
styles. What blew me away was the
depth of
knowledge
he had
about it all. He
was doin' the
punk-out stuff
before anyone.
You don't
get into the
radio hall of
fame by being a
slacker and
it's an
honor and privilege
for us to feature a channel loaded with
his favorites
which include the classic R&B and
Soul of the late 50s, pre-Motown and
the great sounds of Chess, Roulette,
Staxx, Bell, Sun and more great
early R&B labels. |
