One of
the world's best mix show/club jocks to ever hit the turntables. I don't only say
that because we're friends and partners, I say that because he
is. Many jocks are good, many great but Kenny was far and
above the best I've ever heard. His technicals were above and
beyond anyone's. You never heard a dual drum roll in his
mixes, you would never hear the "train wreck" of
two songs off beat banging into each other and he was always mixing songs in
key.
If you wanted to say
anything bad about him you just couldn't because he's never
let it go to his head. He's as grounded today as he was back
then and I've known him for almost 30 years.

While he was mixing at Disco
DAI I was working at a club called the Ambassador which was a
teen disco in Cicero from about '78 to 80 where we drew people from
all over. As a DJ I found his style of both programming and mixing
far more interesting than anyone else's on the mix shows at
Disco DAI. His mix sets always had a great balance of the
R&B based dance with the club/disco hits and they were
blended far better than any other jock I had heard. |
From Disco DAI Kenny was asked
to come to WGCI by Lee Michaels, then PD of WGCI prior to
going to WBMX. Many people want to say (jealous and
industry jocks) "WBMX, The Hot Mix 5 etc... they weren't
the end all be all or it wasn't that important". That's
jealousy speaking, they're not being intellectually honest and
they're not giving credit where credit is due. Sure there were
great jocks in Chicago but they weren't consistently turning
in mixes to the station, their work wasn't consistently good
or their attitudes were anti everything that they got in their
own way.
It was through the mix shows on
WBMX that MASS EXPOSURE of the original members of the Hot Mix
5 CREATED the phenomenon that is house music
for the MASSES and is most known by people. The guys who were in the record pools, working
clubs, doing mobiles, all their jobs were made easier by the
exposure given to JACK TRAX, IMPORTS and DANCE MUSIC. If it
weren't for that exposure on WBMX those songs would've never
seen the light of day in Chicago or in other markets for that
matter. The guys who were spinning parties had records out,
guys like Andre' Hatchett and other great jocks in Chicago,
Artists like Marshall Jefferson, Chip E, Adonis and others had
their music exposed EN MASSE thanks to WBMX and the Hot
Mix 5 first incarnation and that carried over to B96 from the
late 80s into the mid 90s with some of the same guys. (See DJ
Profile for more on them). If not for that exposure
those records received via WBMX and the mix shows, they
probably would've not had the buzz they had and the lucrative
licensing deals around the world may not have come to
fruition. It was the mix shows that created the demand
for the records being played and in turn that demand caused
record labels and other DJs around the Country to BUY those
records and the BUZZ caught on WORLDWIDE, once again, it was
that EXPOSURE that gave those songs the legitimacy.
Unfortunately all the animosity against
the guys who were chosen to be the original Hot Mix 5 is also
part of the history but Kenny never
showed any of it towards them, a class act all the way. He
reached out and helped others along the way. Kenny's career
started as an engineer for The Little Village Boys & Girls
radio station WCYC (where he and I met and in time through his
sister would become friends) he was also a board op at 16 for
Irene Mojica, Tino Rojas and other Chicago legends. From there
he started spinning at local halls with 45s and as a drummer
in High School, it wasn't hard to figure out how to mix
proving that straight white guys can cut it up too.
Once he sent his tape into to
DISCO DAI, he became a regular mixer on the Friday Night Dance
Party which led him to WGCI after WDAI's format change to an
even bigger loser.
Kenny's
achievements on a professional level are nothing short of
amazing.

From
DJ, to Producer and more, if you asked Kenny what his greatest
accomplishments aside from family are? He'd say "leading
by example, by showing that a kid from the neighborhood
doesn't have to get into "trouble" to make a living
and earn respect from your peers. This is the one that sticks
out the most"
